This was going so well until the violence kicked in and the stereotypes against women were depicted 100 times more dramatic and worse. This is not realistic.
This series lives on one-dimensionality, especially when it comes to men. The author gave a statistic on the sexual assault rate on women that are incarcerated, which is terrible. But then this whole issues has simply represented men as the oppressors, men as the violent ones (im aware they commit more violent crimes, but the way this series does it is so simplistic and one-dimensional, it's not realistic at all), only the women are given character development attention while the men are little pawns. If you want equality, you'd build both characters for both genders, not focus solely on one and neglect the other and their problems (male on male violence is a problem too, so is the rape and sexual assault rate of men in prison FYI- let's talk about the issues for BOTH sides, not simply talk about one and then blame the other completely, with no attempt to differentiate the minority from the majority).
This series could have really gotten into something interesting too- this one character that likes little girls (or really any of the men that are assholes in this, I wish this series would delve into their histories too, how they became the way they are...not depict them as some mindless oppressor). I know pedophilia is a taboo topic, but I think it would have been interesting to know how he got to this level- what causes a person to think this way and feel this way. I want to understand HOW a person became this way, not hate them all (okay I do hate pedophiles, with a passion). Or maybe he was mentally ill, idk there were a lot of ways this could have gone, but of course he, like basically every other male, was decided as a classic danger to women and his (view spoiler)[death then seemed justified (hide spoiler)]. Violence on violence solves nothing. So far most men that have laid a hand on the women in this series, and they've always been depicted as the ones to do it first of course, end up beaten up as retribution- as if that's the solution- more violence!
I really have an issue how both men and women are repsetned in this- women as karate kicking bad asses- it's okay to be gentle and sweet...nothing wrong with that kind of girl...there are all types of strength! - and men as the bastard kicking assholes. Majority of them are this way. This is like saying majority of men are oppressive to women, if we put this comic on a scale to the real world, while a minority (I think like 2 men so far have been decent) are terrible. And that females need to be "take no shit hoorah hear me roar!" type- what's wrong with being gentle and sweet? Is it because it doesn't work for this world? But there are all types of people in the real world, you don't have to become silent one type to get your way. This is just wrong on both accounts.
There are all types of men in the world and all types of women in the world.
If anything this series has proven to me feminism does not stand for equality-at least not for men, it's from the female perspective only- especially if these are the things it is criticizing and these are it's solutions. I don't think all of feminism is this way and I'm not using a comic to justify my beliefs, I've seen and met great Feminists, but I do think it is from the female perspective in general- and that's fine, but don't later play it off as equality for both genders. It's about females.
Equality would be the MRA working with Feminists.
Equality is men and women represented together, sticking up for each other, praising them both, giving them both opportunities and then judging them based on their skills and effort, not the sex between their legs.
This is Ridiculous.
