Oh this book made me feel genuinely ill. I had NO idea what it was going to be about. I just saw "Rwanda" and thought "Yessss I need to read more books set in Africa!" (Because I've read, like, zero.) And I love YA so it was basically a spontaneous library borrow for me. But it's actually about the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. I knew nothing about that. And honestly the book didn't even do much EXPLAINING about it either, but after I finished reading I went and googled. SO YEAH. Wow. The end of this book is truly horrifying.
It's told by Pascal who is like 12 (? ish ?) when the story takes place. So from a 12yo's perspective, we (as the readers) don't learn much? I was VERY confused. There were all this "ominous" vibes. But Pascal basically was caught up with school and doing chores and church and fighting with his mean big brother and just general family life. So because he was mildly oblivious, I had to read between the lines: I struggled with that.
And I found the writing a bit...bland? At the beginning I was just all "WHERE IS THIS GOING" and by the end I understood a) why it was told in the childlike style, and b) why it took such pains to show how normal/happy Pascal's life was pre-genocide. So I GET THAT. But it was kind of confusing and at times the writing felt flat.
Oh! Oh! But I have to say: I LOVED the family dynamics! It made it so real and...later...made the horror hit home so hard because Pascal really had a great loving family.
I did learn a lot reading this. Although, honestly, I still feel blindsided and ill. I wish the backcover had SAID what it was going to be about exactly???? And I feel bad for not even knowing this genocide happened. Apparently (from researching further) nearly 1 million people were slaughtered.
It's a powerful, simple book and really opened my eyes. Be prepared for a TOUGH story, viewed through a young boy's innocent perspective. It was such a real view of Africa, too, which I fully appreciated. It's co-written by an Aussie and also a Rwandan who was 10 during the genocide. So this book? I'm assuming it tells it how it really was. Wow. Yup. I'm officially shaken.
