Read full description of the books:
As a kid, I sometimes watched HONEYMOONERS reruns with my dad. The humor was of the old-fashioned slapstick variety, but it made me laugh, and as I got older, I began appreciating the comic performers who made it all work. Jackie Gleason, the star, especially seemed larger than in life. I saw him in movies – from THE HUSTLER (before my time, but I watched it on television with my dad once.) to SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT to THE STING II to NOTHING IN COMMON – and he definitely had a certain screen presence and charisma that you couldn’t ignore. Stories about his hard partying and disdain for rehearsal added to the mystique. Gleason seemed fascinating and so, when I saw this biography in a used book store, I decided to pick it up.
The author, W.J. Weatherby, interviewed Gleason over a twenty-plus year span, and the book was published a mere five years after Gleason’s death. Insight and immediacy are thus two big advantages here. The book is full of oral histories and anecdotes, from both Gleason and people who knew him. We learn of the Gleason who grew up poor and was abandoned by his father, thus possibly instilling a lifelong fear of rejection. We learn of the Gleason who was often brash but also generous, sought control in his work environment and inspired great loyalty from others. He was indeed a fascinating and complex figure, and if you don’t necessarily get to know him through this book, you’ll at least get a good sense of what it was like to be around him.
Of course, oral histories and anecdotes have their shortcomings. How much can we believe? Even Weatherby, the author, isn’t always certain. He acknowledges, for example, that Gleason himself told different versions of some stories.
In fact, those hoping for a detailed, well-sourced account of Gleason’s life might find themselves disappointed. While we get the gist of it all here, the book – clocking in at a mere 230 pages plus some ancillary material - sometimes seems surprisingly sketchy. While I haven’t read every book on Gleason, I do wonder if a definitive biography is yet to be done.
That’s not to say that JACKIE GLEASON: AN INTIMATE PORTRAIT OF THE GREAT ONE isn’t worth reading, because it is. Many biographers fill their books with richly detailed minutia without ever capturing a sense of their subject. Weatherby does not have that problem. His Gleason biography may not be scholarly, but it’s lively, and Gleason’s colorful personality pops off the page. It’s arguable whether this is the biography that Gleason deserves, but I can’t help thinking that it’s the biography that the Great One himself would have preferred.
