If it were possible to read with your eyes closed, then it would be easy to imagine oneself in a smokey sixties coffee house surrounded by black turtlenecked beatniks snapping their fingers in cool approval. At first anyway. Dig deeper and you'll find there is much more here.
The poetry scene of fifties and sixties produced some of the most self-indulgent rubbish of the twentieth century. Most poets seemed more interested in the rewards of being a poet (not having to work for a living and easy access to sex and drugs) than they were in writing good poems. Leonard Cohen is an exception - even though he reaped as many rewards as anyone. In a generation of con-men, he was the honest con-man.
Cue the a grainy black and white film - Cohen, fully dressed in suit and tie, lies in the empty hotel bathtub. He takes a black marker and writes CAVEAT EMPTOR on the wall.
What seperated Cohen from his peers was his ability to write poems that transcended the immediate concerns of his immediate surroundings. His use of classical and historical allusions let it be known that intellegence and education were damn sexy. He was secure enough to set off bombs of sentiment and romance - something the beats of the day had no courage for. Indeed "Beat" is too tight a jacket to force Cohen into - these poems were built to last beyond the fashion of the time the were written in, and fifty years on have lost none of their relevance.

Read information about the authorLeonard Norman Cohen was a Canadian singer-songwriter, poet and novelist. Cohen published his first book of poetry in Montreal in 1956 and his first novel in 1963.
Cohen's earliest songs (many of which appeared on the 1968 album Songs of Leonard Cohen) were rooted in European folk music melodies and instrumentation, sung in a high baritone. The 1970s were a musically restless period in which his influences broadened to encompass pop, cabaret, and world music. Since the 1980s he has typically sung in lower registers (bass baritone, sometimes bass), with accompaniment from electronic synthesizers and female backing singers.
His work often explores the themes of religion, isolation, sexuality, and complex interpersonal relationships.
Cohen's songs and poetry have influenced many other singer-songwriters, and more than a thousand renditions of his work have been recorded. He has been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and is also a Companion of the Order of Canada, the nation's highest civilian honour. Cohen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 10, 2008 for his status among the "highest and most influential echelon of songwriters".
