Osamdesetih godina sedamnaestog veka trgovina robljem još je bila u povoju. Jakob je anglo-holandski trgovac i avanturista, s malim imanjem na surovom severu. Sticajem okolnosti, na njegov posed stiže mlada robinja Florens „s rukama robinje a stopalima portugalske gospođe“, koja ume da čita i piše i mogla bi mu biti od koristi.

Svi stanovnici Jakobovog imanja okovani su svojim sudbinama: Lina, sluškinja domorodačke američke krvi, čije su pleme desetkovale velike boginje; njihova gospođa Rebeka, koja je i sama bila žrtva verskog žara u rodnoj Engleskoj; mlada Tuga, ćerka pomorskog kapetana, koja je provela previše godina na moru da bi bila potpuno „normalna“; najzad, tu je i Florens, željna majčinske ljubavi. Opirući se svakodnevici oni pokušavaju da žive život izvan stega sopstvene sudbine.

Milosrđe nas vodi u prve dane perioda crnačkog ropstva u Americi. Slikajući različite verske običaje i prikazujući odnose između muškarca i žene ono nam govori o ljudima koji nikada nisu sazdali svet prema svojoj meri, već je svet oblikovao njih. Iako je to roman o ropstvu on je prvenstveno potresna priča o majci i kćeri u jednom nasilnom i neuređenom svetu – svetu gde čin milosrđa, jednako kao i sve drugo, ima nepredvidljive posledice.
